Upstream Arts' Programs

Upstream Arts offers arts education programming for:

Upstream Arts’ programs range in discipline from theater to poetry to visual arts to music. Programs are offered at many different times of day, including on school release days and after school hours, and are located around the metro area, through artist residencies in metro area schools, and on-site at or in cooperation with local, disability-focused organizations.  No matter the program, however, every Upstream Arts experience includes the following essentials:

  • Workshops are inclusive of individuals of all abilities and participation ranges from simply being present to performing in front of others. Participants are encouraged to cooperatively create together.
  • The Performing Arts is used as the basis for our educational approach.
  • Activities encourage social interaction and communication skills applicable to day-to-day life.
  • Workshops are led by local, professional artists of a variety of disciplines, who have been trained to provide programming to groups of individuals with a range of abilities.

“The program builds the ability to listen and process information, and the ability to participate...I could go down the list of changes I have seen in individual kids.”

-Patrick Burns, Special Education faculty, about the Artist Residency in his classroom
