Wilderness Inquiry adventures at the Apostle Islands

Wilderness Inquiry adventures at the Apostle Islands

The countdown begins for The Art of We, our 2nd Annual Meeting and Fundraiser, coming up on Monday, May 11! Between now and then, we’re excited to share some sneak peeks at the fun to come. First up: Our amazing friends at Wilderness Inquiry have donated a gift certificate for a trip to the gorgeous Apostle Islands, to be auctioned off live during the event program at 7pm! Get inspired by this brief Q&A with Wildnerness Inquiry Outreach Director Jeffrey Kemnitz – then start packing your bags and warming up for the bidding wars to come.

For the uninitiated, what is Wilderness Inquiry?
Wilderness Inquiry is a non-profit outdoor adventure organization that connects people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to the natural world through shared outdoor experiences. Our Gateway to Adventure program provides access to outdoor experiences for people with developmental and cognitive disabilities. Many individuals may then participate in our integrated Share the Adventure programs as the next step towards increased independence.

What is included in the gift certificate that will be auctioned off at The Art of We?
Two people will be able to join Wilderness Inquiry for a sea kayaking trip to the Apostle Islands. The Apostle Islands are a group of 22 islands off the Bayfield Peninsula in northern Wisconsin. They are known for their majestic sea caves, sandy beaches, historic lighthouses, and sunken shipwrecks! The beauty of the islands’ unique geography makes for phenomenal sea kayaking trips. We will run 45 Apostle Islands trips from our Little Sand Bay Basecamp this summer. We offer the widest variety of programming in the area: family trips, foodie trips, basecamp-based trips with day excursions, and extended trips with island camping. These adventures are great for both new and experienced kayakers and offer opportunities to hike and explore this National Park treasure.

What inspired Wilderness Inquiry to support The Art of We in this way?
Wilderness Inquiry and Upstream Arts serve people with disabilities by different means. At Wilderness Inquiry, adventure is our medium. We cherish the opportunity to partner with Upstream Arts, because we believe in the power of outdoor experiences and art to foster personal growth, independence, and feelings of belonging for adults and youth with disabilities.

Anything else coming up that you’d like to share or promote?
Please support our mission by donating to support our Gateway to Adventure program that serves the diverse needs of people with developmental and cognitive disabilities. Also, every year our largest single fundraising event is our Great River Race. On September 12, 2015, dozens of teams will paddle the Mississippi River in our 24-foot Voyageur canoes to raise money for our Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures program that provides access to outdoor experiences for urban youth.
