Upstream Arts is proud to present an intimate evening with National Public Radio’s 2016 Tiny Desk Concert Winner, the classically trained violinist, singer, and songwriter Gaelynn Lea! On Monday, February 20, come enjoy Gaelynn Lea’s gorgeous music, interspersed with her personal stories about disability advocacy and the arts.
Based in Duluth, Minnesota, Gaelynn Lea has played her music around Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin for over ten years. She performs solo sets of experimental fiddle tunes and original songs, while also regularly playing alongside other notable musicians such as Alan Sparhawk (with whom she collaborates under the name The Murder of Crows), Charlie Parr, and Billy McLaughlin. Her meditative style of music is instantly captivating, and her music video entry for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest was the unanimous favorite of the judges among the 6,100 entries from around the nation.
In addition to performing, Gaelynn is a public speaker who’s passionate about discussing disability, overcoming challenges, and the joy of music. Gaelynn has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bones Disease. She uses her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities, encourage accessibility, and promote positive social change. You can learn more about Gaelynn Lea at her website, or click here for a few videos of Gaelynn Lea’s music and public speaking.
We hope you’ll join us for this event, which was made possible through generous support from The Bush Foundation and The Graham Smith Team at Keller Williams Realty. We’re thrilled this concert will take place at Surly Brewing Company‘s Scheid Hall on Monday, February 20, 2017 from 6-9pm, with a reception featuring complimentary snacks and a cash bar starting at 6pm followed by the program at 7pm.
