It was a heavy conversation, but with a breath of relief Matt, Caleb’s mom, and I went on the journey of working with Allay Care together to plan in advance and prepare for our son Caleb’s end of life. And although there is no time in our day that we wanted to make this a priority, our experience left me feeling relieved to have had this series of conversations with Allay Care when we had the presence of mind to think about what Caleb would want, not just in his death, but more importantly in his life. I feel that this planning process and work, will in fact allow us and Caleb to live better now – and for many years to come.

With this personal experience in mind, we wanted to draw attention to this resource and invite our community to learn more. Our original session was cancelled and has been rescheduled. Please join us on Wednesday, November 20 from 6:00-7:30pm at the Upstream Arts Office for a 90-minute info session with Allay Care Services. *Please note, this info session has been canceled. If you are interested in the material, click on this link to schedule a 15 minute call with an Allay facilitator.
From our partners at Allay Care Services:
“The Upstream Arts community provides a lifetime of learning experiences for individuals with disabilities, from birth to retirement and beyond. This session shines a light on a time we will all experience but often don’t want to think about: death and dying. For people with disabilities and the people who love and support them, this can be especially challenging to plan for or even discuss.
We’ll help you work as a team to think through, talk about, and document the big things in that challenging time (and some little things that make a big difference). With a healthy blend of reverence and irreverence, we’ll answer questions, share stories, and maybe laugh with the help of a few good-natured cartoons. There will be individual reflection time, small group discussion time, and large group presentations (on health care directives and eco-friendly cremation/burial options, for example). You’ll go home with a practical tool for engaging in the conversations that need to happen and for clarifying the values that guide it all.”
All are welcome. Please RSVP by Wednesday, November 13.
